Elizabeth Martinez faced a significant obstacle in her career when her employer required a high school diploma. Despite her best efforts, Elizabeth faced the same hurdle at every job opportunity. However, she didn’t give up. Instead, Elizabeth discovered the AVANCE-Houston Adult Education Program and enrolled in the 2022 fall classes.
AVANCE-Houston and Comcast provide pathways to a brighter future for adult students
During her time in the program, she expanded her knowledge in technology thanks to workshops funded by Comcast – Igniting Pathways. With the help of the teachers, Elizabeth completed assignments, practiced tests, learned Microsoft Office programs, and selected technology modules, such as financial education, personal finance, and keyboarding. She felt that these modules helped her greatly. She also benefitted from the resume-building workshops and developed interview skills for various positions.
Elizabeth’s dedication and hard work paid off when she graduated with her GED in the Spring of 2023 and was awarded the AVANCE Scholarship. With this scholarship, she immediately enrolled at Houston Community College and obtained her Medical Billing and Coding Certificate within three months.
Her story is a shining example of the power of determination and education, as she overcame obstacles and achieved her goals. Now, she is successfully employed at the Interactive College of Technology, and her financial situation has significantly improved.
