The first day of school brings families, teachers, and Chief Leadership together

On Monday, August 28th, the AVANCE-Houston centers began their program for the 2023-2024 year. Parents accompanied their children, some attending for the first time while others returned for another year of education. The hallways were bustling with students searching for their classrooms, teachers, friends, and familiar faces from the previous year.

Under the motto “Parents are the first teachers, Home is the first classroom,” Luz Flores, AVANCE-Houston Executive Director, welcomed the children, parents, and staff at the Mangum Educational Center. Dr. Antoinette Montgomery, Deputy Director, welcomed all families at the Mount Houston EHS/HS center, while Kristie Mireles, Sr. Director II of Early Head Start and Head Start, welcomed all families from Tegeler Early Head Start (EHS).

“I’m thrilled to welcome you and your loved ones to this program year. We are working to provide opportunities for students to thrive, make new connections, engage with exciting activities, and learn from our awesome, dedicated teachers,” said Flores during her welcome message to all AVANCE families.

Our centers’ teachers strive to prepare young children for school. We take a holistic approach and offer services to help parents reach their full potential, such as the Parent-Child Education Program (PCEP), Healthy Relationships, Fatherhood, and Financial Literacy programs. At AVANCE, everyone is warmly welcomed.
