Lewis Omike’s journey – Determination and education can change the course of a life

Lewis Omike learned at an early age that education wasn’t just important, it was the heartbeat of his family. Raised in a home where learning and hard work were celebrated, he grew up believing that knowledge was the key to a brighter future. When he moved to Houston, he brought that belief with him, determined to continue his studies and create lasting opportunities for his own children.

Lewis’s path led him to AVANCE through a friend, where he first joined the AVANCE Healthy Relationships program. There, he discovered tools for personal growth, healthy relationships, and financial empowerment. That experience didn’t just inform him, it transformed him. Motivated and inspired, Lewis immediately enrolled in AVANCE to College at Houston City College (HCC), ready to push himself even further.

The AVANCE to College program is a groundbreaking partnership between HCC Southeast and AVANCE-Houston, created to help parents of young children pursue higher education while strengthening their parenting and leadership skills. Tailored for parents of children five and younger—including expecting parents, the program blends parenting education with college and career development. Participants take part in workshops that strengthen relationships and promote early learning at home, while college readiness sessions provide hands-on guidance in academic planning, financial aid, and workforce preparation. Personalized home visits ensure each family receives one-on-one coaching and access to community resources that remove barriers to success.

Today, Lewis is thriving in the program. He is building strong, positive habits, learning how to be the best father he can be to his two children, and prioritizing his mental and physical well-being. He describes the program as deeply therapeutic helping him break free from old patterns, open his mind, and uncover strengths he didn’t know he had. He’s even exploring new skills, like creating something from scratch—learning to build and craft, including making a doll—showing that growth can happen in the most unexpected ways.

What makes Lewis’s story inspiring is his resilience. Despite facing ongoing transportation challenges, he has never missed a class. His dedication is unwavering, driven by a simple but powerful belief: never give up. With relentless perseverance, Lewis dreams of becoming a real estate developer and building a lasting legacy for his family, one rooted in education, resilience, and opportunity.
