From Fence Repair to Full Transformation: Volunteers Exceed Expectations at Oakwood

What began as a playground improvement project turned into an extraordinary display of generosity and community spirit at AVANCE-Houston’s Oakwood Early Head Start/Head Start Center.

A dedicated team from GRIS Engineering and 11 volunteers from the American Society of Civil Engineers Houston Branch (ASCE Houston) spent the day transforming the outdoor space for the children and families we serve. Together, the volunteers pressure-washed and painted the playground, built a new fence, and cleaned and refreshed the garden area, creating a safer and more inviting environment for learning and playing.

What made this project especially meaningful was the volunteers’ commitment to going beyond what was expected. The original plan was to replace only the broken and damaged sections of the playground fence due to budget limitations. When the volunteers learned there were not enough materials to complete the entire fence, they felt that a partial repair would not do justice to the project or the children and families who use the space every day.

Rather than settle for a temporary solution, the team stepped up and purchased additional materials to complete the entire fence, creating a cohesive, safe, and beautiful final result for the Oakwood campus. Their dedication didn’t stop there. While all volunteers worked from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., four volunteers stayed an additional two hours to ensure the project was completed and every detail was finished properly.

Beyond the Fence: Oakwood Playground Transformation

Adding to the effort, Revive Renovations, a fencing company, provided expertise and guidance throughout the project, helping ensure the fence was properly installed and met safety standards. Both GRIS Engineering and Revive Renovations also contributed financially to help bring the project to completion.

Their investment goes far beyond physical improvements. The enhanced playground, garden area, and new fencing provide children with a welcoming outdoor environment where they can play, explore, learn, and grow safely.

AVANCE-Houston extends its heartfelt gratitude to GRIS Engineering, ASCE Houston, and Revive Renovations for their generosity, hands-on service, and unwavering commitment to our children. Their willingness to go above and beyond reminds us that when community partners come together, they build much more than fences. They help create spaces where children can thrive.
