AVANCE-Houston Receives Extreme Classroom Makeover

AVANCE-Houston EHS and HS directors, staff, and Policy Council officers (parents) went to Phoenix, Arizona, for the 50th annual National Head Start Association (NHSA) conference last May. The NHSA conference is the biggest national event dedicated to Head Start, where representatives and families from our community come together to share, network, learn, and celebrate the significance of early childhood education.

Throughout the week’s event, the staff had the chance to improve their skills through professional development opportunities such as media training and leadership development. Meanwhile, parents learned about family advocacy efforts and discussed how Head Start programs positively impact their communities.

In addition to all the knowledge gained during this interactive conference, Policy Council Vicechair Bryant Robinson entered AVANCE for a raffle in which we were the winners.

What was the prize? An extreme classroom makeover valued at $25,000!

BEFORE

This makeover was gifted by Carson Dellosa Education, whose mission is to create high-quality educational materials that inspire learning, foster academic growth, and empower educators and students alike.

The company arrived in Houston in late June and transformed the selected classrooms. They revamped the walls, decor, and storage and provided an organizational system and new furniture sponsored by Flash Furniture. Within four days, they had turned the classroom into a peaceful and welcoming learning environment for teachers and students.

AFTER

The Walters Road Head Start center hosted a grand reveal event on June 30th, welcoming staff and new families. We are delighted by the generous gesture from Carson Dellosa Education towards our students, who genuinely deserve every opportunity for success. Witnessing the reactions of all the attendees was truly priceless.

“The newly designed classroom will be an additional resource for young learners to foster their love for learning through play. We are incredibly thankful to Carson-Dellosa Education for such a fantastic opportunity”, stated AVANCE-Houston Executive Director Luz Flores.
