When Pilar reminisces about her work with the program, she recalls with joy the direct contact she had with the mothers and teaching them. The GED program provided services to several women who wanted to learn the basics; those women had children who grew up and brought their own children to AVANCE. Pilar has seen them graduate, form their own families, and become self-sufficient.
When asked what she enjoys most about her job, Pilar says it is hard to pick just one thing, but it is the people she works with and the knowledge that AVANCE is making a difference in the lives of the children they serve. Every family is unique, and they strive to assist them in every way possible. Pilar feels at home at AVANCE and appreciates the professional growth opportunities provided by the organization. She is motivated by her colleagues and supervisor, who care for the communities they serve.
Pilar’s advice to new hires is to remember that all they achieve comes from their commitment to the families they serve. AVANCE has been a great source of support for Pilar, her children, and her community. In 2023, she celebrates her 24 years of service and is proud of her son, Manuel, who graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Houston, and her son Gerardo, who will soon be graduating as well. She feels proud to be part of the AVANCE family.
Pilar’s story is a testament to the positive impact that non-profit organizations like AVANCE can have on families and their communities. Her unwavering dedication and commitment to empowering Houston families are inspiring, and we are grateful for her service.
