AVANCE families received a car seat training held at the Tegeler Early Head Start center on Friday, November 30th, to educate parents on the correct way to install their child’s car seat. In collaboration with technicians from Safe Kids of Greater Houston and the Texas Children’s Center for Childhood Injury Prevention Medical Center, AVANCE was able to provide and installed 75 new car seats to Early Head Start families.
This important monthly training helps parents to avoid common mistakes such as seats that are too loose, infant seats that are facing forward, retainer clips used incorrectly or not at all, and car seats that have been recalled or expired.
Proper use of safety seats helps keep children safe, one of the most important responsibilities of a parent.
As of Sept. 2009, Texas law requires children under the age of 8 or under 4 feet 9 inches to be restrained in a car seat suitable for the age, height, and weight. Children should not be moved to a booster seat until they are 4 years old, 40 pounds or more, and are mature enough to sit still for the entire car ride. Children, especially infants, should be in a rear-facing seat as long as possible.
