AVANCE-Houston’s 4th Annual Luncheon welcomed over 200 supporters of our mission and celebrated the impact the agency is making in the community while raising over $68,000 to fund its nationally recognized Parent-Child Education Program, and will also provide scholarships to help AVANCE GED graduates pay for their first semester in college.

This year’s theme, “Composing Notes of Education,” was inspired by children’s ability to learn through many resources including musical instruments, and positions AVANCE as a key orchestrator of education in the community. The event took place at the Junior League of Houston on April 7th, 2017.

The event featured Houston ISD Superintendent,  Richard A. Carranza, as the keynote speaker. He emphasized the importance of high-quality early childhood education and the benefits of establishing strong collaborations.

Additionally, attendees also enjoyed a performance by special guest, Classical Violinist and Innovative Composer, Kai Kight.

Broadcast Journalist, Vicente Arenas served as emcee and helped present awards to two AVANCE graduates, the Cruz-Rogel family, and Carizma Young who were honored with the Exemplary Family award for their hard work, and dedication towards creating a brighter future for themselves and their children.

Carizma Young was honored for completing the Parent-Child Education program while incarcerated at the Santa Maria Hostel. She is currently working towards a Paralegal certification to provide better opportunities to her only child.

Many thanks to all sponsors, donors, Board of Directors, table captains, and volunteers—it takes a village to put an event of this magnitude together, and AVANCE could not have done it without you.
