The Brutal Truth Project

AVANCE-Houston, Inc. has partnered with Dr. Keith Robinson and Carrie Woliver to expand the Brutal Truth project: “Protecting the Family from Violence”, a family violence education and awareness project at AVANCE’s centers and sites during the program year 2010-2011.  The program was created in 2006 by the video’s host, Dr. Keith A. Robinson, directed by Rick Christie, and was co-produced by Dr. Robinson and Carrie Woliver.  It video was aired on the Public Broadcasting Station in 2007 and was nominated for an Emmy Award.

There are as many ways to parent as there are people attempting to be parents.  Today’s children are growing up in a world that is far different from the one that we grew up in.  The stresses are enormous.  All parents struggle with raising children and all parents worry about discipline issues, about their children being abused and bullied at school, and whether their children’s behaviors are normal and appropriate for their current stage or development.

AVANCE recognizes that parenting is one of the most difficult experiences in life and that there are as many ways to parent as there are people attempting to be parents.  AVANCE developed the Brutal Truth Training Manuals for Facilitators and Parents in English and Spanish to give them a new insight on how to overcome some of the toughest problems parents face today and prevent violence in the lives of children. The goal of the manual is to enhance awareness, help parents identify problems, and work towards developing an action plan with other members of the community to help make raising children in today’s world a little easier.

The Brutal Truth Manual covers nine sensitive topics with issues that could result in emotional reaction from parents. Therefore, the Training Manual for Facilitators prepare them for dealing with issues of disclosure and confidentiality related to the topics.

Topics:

  • Good Parenting
  • Shaken Baby
  • Bullying
  • Sexual Abuse
  • Self-Esteem
  • Discipline
  • Abuse vs. Neglect
  • Temper Tantrums
  • When you Blow it

AVANCE launched the program in 2010 and offered Professional Development training opportunities, technical assistant and demonstrations in English and Spanish to increase program awareness and prevent family violence in our community. Plans are on its way to implement the Brutal Truth Program at AVANCE centers/sites. For more information about the program, its benefits and research-based curriculum, please contact Nilia L.
