The Mangum Education Center ribbon cutting ceremony was a great success. The event took place on the grounds of AVANCE's new flagship education center on October 22 at 11:30 AM. Keynote address by Mayor Annise Parker and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.

AVANCE Family Support and Education Program Expands in Northwest Houston

Avance-Houston, Inc. received $6 milion in stimulus funds to open an educational center for its Head Start and elementary charter school programs. The center, located at 4503 Mangum, is on the site of several abandoned buildings that are being renovated and converted to classrooms and other facilities. The construction is expected to be completed by the start of the school year in the fall. Read more...

Hector Rodriguez is a humanist, published author, consultant and international motivational speaker. He has dedicated his professional career to the research, and implementation of programs geared towards the primary developmetn of individuals and family empowerment. For the last nine years, he has been part of AVANCE-Houston, Inc., where he works with the Head Start Program Coordinators and Specialists in the planning of Parent Education and Parent Development activities. Abandoned buildings on Mangum to be transformed into Head Start/Early Head Start Center

Thanks to an influx of federal stimulus funds, the abandoned, empty buildings and parking lot on Mangum - just north of West 43rd - will soon be transformed from a neighborhood eyesore into a well-designed and attractive Head Start/Early Head Start Center and Elementary Education Young Learners Charter School. Longtime community volunteers Penny and John Butler were honored earlier this month by AVANCE-Houston at the organization's annual gala at the Hilton Houston Post Oak.
The gala raised nearly $100,000 for AVANCE's programs, which include area-wide classes in parenting, adult literacy, GED, English and computer training.Read more...

Taxpayer Dollars Earmarked for the State of Couples' Unions

President Bush's plan to fight poverty by encouraging marriage will mean at least $2.5 million this year for community and faith-based groups in Houston to offer workshops and activities aimed at developing stable relationships. The beneficiaries include a community group that works with unwed couples having babies and an organization that helps resettled international refugees adjust to family life in Houston. The money, more than $150 million nationally, is being funneled primarily to groups targeting the poor. The policy is driven in large part by statistics showing that children from single-parent families and broken homes are far more likely to grow up in poverty than children raised by stable couples.
