AVANCE Houston celebrated another successful year of service to the community, while honoring Houston’s very deserving leaders, CHOICE! Energy CEO Javier Loya and his wife Lucinda. The event took place at the Houston Hilton Post Oak last Friday.
The “Latin fusion” themed event, kicked off with a lively salsa dance performance, followed by gala emcee KPRC local 2’s Kim Davis, who opened up the program for over 300 guests and introduced Mayor Annise Parker, who thanked the crowd for their commitment and support to AVANCE. “Strong families, strong children, lead to a successful community.” She said, while proudly acknowledging the crowd’s efforts to bettering Houston: “There is no city in the world that I would prefer to be Mayor of” she concluded.
Martha Rost, AVANCE Board Chair, along with Gloria Luna and Pamela O'Rourke, Board members and gala Chairs, presented the “Roy Barbosa” award to Octavio and Maria Avelina Garcia, a married couple and graduates of all AVANCE parenting and adult education programs, in recognition of their efforts and perseverance towards a better future for their children.
The crowd then applauded as honorees Javier, Lucinda and daughters Estela and Ana were called up to receive their award in acknowledgement of their generosity and valuable contributions to the community. Javier, whose early childhood mirrors the life of families served by AVANCE delivered a heart warming message, while his two charming daughters, whispered to his ear throughout the entire speech. To wrap up the program, the three sang Happy Birthday to Lucinda while the crowd joined in.
Mango Punch entertained the crowd with their latin rhythm, and while many danced, others enjoyed casino or browsed through the silent auction area.
Other special guests in attendance included: Councilmembers Brenda Stardig and Jolanda Jones, Consul General of Mexico-Dr. Luis Malpica y de Lamadrid, AVANCE Executive Director-Jose Villarreal, Cordua Restaurants Owner & Executive Chef Michael and Lucia Cordua, Rice University Professor Dr. Stephen Klineberg and others.
The Loyas are committed to the Houston community and devote their time to helping others as well as supporting numerous Houston charities. Javier is the president and CEO of Houston-based CHOICE! Energy and is a minority owner of the NFL’s Houston Texans. Lucinda manages a successful career with interior design projects in Houston and other states including New York and California.
