Nearly 200 AVANCE Head Start parents attended the all-day conference on Saturday, April 16th at the Crowne Plaza Northwest, and listened to encouraging words from Precinct 6-Constable Victor Treviño, who after opening the event, introduced two talented officers who sang and delighted the crowd with their voices.
Through out the day, parents took advantage of a variety of workshops in English & Spanish presented by professionals who covered important topics such as: Stranger Danger & Substance Abuse, Responsible Fatherhood, Bullying, Financial Literacy, Postpartum Depression and more.
Houston’s PBS channel 8, Rima Corral also joined and gave away free autographed copies of her book “How Lil’ Eddie Learns to Read” and shared tips with parents on how to get their children interested in books, and she also explained the importance of reading to them at an early age.
AVANCE offers this conference annually to all its Head Start program parents in order provide them with tools to assist in the education and development of their children, and strengthen the family as whole.
The event closed with lots smiles, giveaways and an empowering message from AVANCE’s Board Chair Martha Rost. She concluded by thanking the parents for attending and for their efforts in ensuring a bright future of the children
