s. Alvis Jones from the AVANCE Golf Head Start
Center shared with us colorful details of how
our children learned and celebrated Black
History Month through music, beautiful art
displays and entertaining stories. The children
admired and learned of the different crafts and
various cultural elements of the African
heritage.
Among the items displayed were a West African
sculpture and an Ashanti sculpture which was
hand-made carved out of wood, and the “Yoruba
girls collecting water”, meaning facial
features. The students learned about notable
African-American writers and activists through
the books displayed such as: “The Complete” by
Maya Angelou, “Through my Eyes” by Ruby Bridges,
“Journey to Freedom” by James Baldwin, “Souls of
my sisters” by Dawn Daniels, “Childtime” by
Eloise Greenfield, and “Sisters Together” by
Nancy Manson.
In addition, the display included several
sculpture figures which are Emma Jane’s babies,
also known as African American figurines by Emma
Jane Watkins who started sculpting as a child,
there was also a quilt that was hand made by Ms.
Jones’s grandmother in 1979, that described the
use of the “freedom quilt”, which used to be
displayed as signal to slaves to pack and get
ready to escape.
On the exhibit they also had the African masks
and the Mambara Masks, both widely used during
rituals, weddings, births and funerals.
