here A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM MS. HOLBERT:
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your
incredible support during this school year. I have thoroughly
enjoyed working with all the children, parents and staff in
helping to make this school such an excellent place to work and
learn. All the staff here will miss all
the smiling faces we see every day tremendously. We are looking
forward to the new school year. Each of your children has
brought such joy and happiness to our classrooms. We were so
fortunate to have such a wonderful group of children this year.
We hope as the years go by that they keep in touch.
Once again thank you.

THE WEEK OF THE YOUNG CHILD AT CHILDREN'S COURTYARD
C. Delgado
The
children, staff and parents of AVANCE Head Start at the
Children’s Courtyard enjoyed the fantastic Week of the Young
Child 2010 with an endless string of fun activities among which
we found:
Monday
The children came to the center wearing colorful and fun “crazy
socks” / “crazy hats” for the day.
Later on everyone went outside and did some arts and crafts. The
children painted giant and vibrant butterflies which came to
life with all the color the children decorated them with.
Tuesday
Volunteers from the Klein Fire Department at Oakwood West
visited the center. The children, guided by the teachers, went
outside to look and climb up the bright Green Fire truck, and
they had the opportunity to explore inside and see all its
accessories. The kids learned how the firemen use the truck to
fight the fire. Some of the children were so inspired that they
decided to become firefighters when they grow up. At the end of
their visit, the volunteers posed with the children for
photographs and reminded them about the safety measures learned
and what to do in case of a fire.
Tuesday was also “Pajama and Movie Day”. The children, their
parents and the teaching staff wore their favorite pajamas.
Among the most popular choices were “Dora the Explorer”, “Tinker
Bell” & “Cars”. Before their nap time, Ms. Holbert the Center
Administrator, sat with the children and had some storytelling
time, reading the beautiful children’s book “Ladybugs” by Mia
Posada.
Wednesday
We
celebrated the Week of the Young Child, enjoying a lively parade
around our playground with the entire center marching. Some
children played musical instruments during the parade. We had
drummers and trumpeters; Mr. Moretti one of them, brought his
very own trumpet (real) and played it while marching along the
parade.
Most
children wore vibrant costumes; with all sorts of imaginative
outfits: green and purple dragons, fairies, Hawaiian-Hula girls
with their grass skirts and flowery leis; koala bears; purple
tigers; Sponge Bob; and even one of our favorite Fantastic 4
action heroes, Ben “The Man of Stone”.
Some
of the children wore cardboard “racecar” costumes which were
created by the staff for the children to race, and even the
staff participated in the “competitive” race (teacher Mr.
Moretti; teacher aide Mrs. Ibañez; center assistant Diana
Garcia; teacher Ms. Rogers; and the center administrator, Ms.
Sandra Holbert). Each classroom created a big WOYC banner that
we used during our festive parade.
Thursday
The
popular Children’s Express Theater came to the center and
presented the play “The Three Little Pigs”, which was enjoyed by
an enthusiastic audience comprised of the children with their
parents. At the end of the show the actors in their colorful
outfits (big bad wolf and the piggies), posed with the children
and their parents, some in individual poses and others in group
as well as with the center’s teaching staff and Ms. Holbert the
center administrator.
FRIDAY
Friday was a “Kite Day” and the children went to play outside to
fly their colorful kites helped by the teachers. The children
ran holding their kites, amazed with how the wind so playfully
danced with them
