The purpose of this initiative is to an promote the appreciation for the rich cultural diversity that we have within AVANCE – Houston

We have organized a talented group of enthusiastic volunteers from different areas within the organization and we named it The Cultural Diversity Team.

The objective is to create a plan to help celebrate the various cultures and broaden the awareness of other cultures in the Houston chapter. The agency’s goal is for all employees to become more sensitive to cultural environments around us as well as welcome the differences among us. The committee goal is to increase employee awareness of cultural differences and sensitivity to various cultures through education, exposure and assimilation.

Proposed Schedule for observation
February      African and African-American cultures
April            Asian cultures
June             Hispanic / Latin cultures
August         International Heritage Day**

**This day we will include all other cultures that may be represented by our employees but may not be included with the other cultural groups while also celebrating the combination of all our cultures here at the Houston chapter of AVANCE.  We will collaborate this day with our staff appreciation celebration.**

Topics:
Include variations in traditions, religions, cultural practices, music, food, etc. and any other topics that staff can be educated on.

Plan of action:
Sub-committees with a captain (or co-captains) for each month will be established to provide input, background and methods for observing and the celebration of cultural differences.  The committee will be free to form the style of the celebration and its content.

Learning to Live Together:
Children and Cultural Diversity

Children of all ages are fascinated by the similarities and differences between themselves and others. Noticing how they are alike or different from other children helps them gain a sense of their own identity, as well as their identity as a member of global community that's made up of different ethnic, racial, and religious groups....Read more...
