OBJECTIVE
The Adult Literacy Program provides basic
literacy and life skills for adults who are unable to speak,
read or write the English language. The program helps them become literate
and obtain the knowledge and skills necessary for employment and
self sufficiency.

CURRICULUM
The TEA Texas Standardized Curriculum is used
for this programs provided by Houston Community College, and the instructors are
required to create an individual lesson plan by student, based on
the results of the baseline test.

ASSESSMENT
The TABE (Texas Adult Basic
Education) survey 9 measures the adult student performance in
Reading, Language and Mathematics. The TABE survey is
administrated by the Instructors at our AVANCE locations. After
60 hours of attendance and instruction, the TABE survey 10
post-test is administrated to the student. If results of the
progress test shows a score of 12.0 in all subjects, the student
is referred by our Instructors to the HCCS testing Center for
GED official test administration.
For the ESL class we administer pre and
post BEST test; oral and written.
BEST TEST (Basic English Skills Test) consists of an oral
interview section and a Literacy Skills section that are scored
separately. This test is administrated by HCCS evaluators at
AVANCE locations.

SEMESTERS:
For ABE/GED, ESL and Computer Classes, we
offer two semesters during the year. The fiscal year starts on
September to December which is our first semester, the second
semester is from January to May.

During the semester we invite different
speakers to lecture the students about diverse topics and careers
including
financial assistance availability after they obtain their GED
certificate. Speakers also inform the students about diverse resources
within the community, such as the First Time Home Buyers Program,
Budgeting, etc.
